Yahoo Big Thinkers - Andrew Tomkins

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

It was Andrew Tomkins' (director of yahoo search research) turn to deliver a speech at the Yahoo big thinkers India series Conference. It happened at the Taj west end,Bangalore and Yahoo had roped in all their employees to fill in the seats that would have been vacant otherwise. That didn't prevent them from snoring off.Could find a lot of entrepreneurs mobbing in.Moving to the content of the speech,Andrew spoke about the data model of flickr, the fragmentation, about the user-generated-content sites(technorati, youtube, flickr, etc) and the current work that is on @ Yahoo search research labs.

With respect to data model Andrews explained about how each user of flickr is varied as "Professional" and "personal" user based on the frequency of his usage of flickr. On Fragmentation,he had a special mention on this snippet - Yahoo represents more than 10% of the www consumption (resultant of all its products).Seems no one has done it till now.He said about how search giants are finding new ways make their search more interactive - Microsoft live search - new interfaces with images.Yahoo - is into ads,Google - doing great with adsense. Also search in yahoo is linked to Yahoo answers. The present work that is under progress @ yahoo is that Yahoo is in relationships with Nokia in India and other service providers to integrate its search engine. In the midst of the speech i got out of sorts with strange formulas that contained in his presentation. Here is one for you Ew(p(c)) = 1/[q=Q;p(pages(Q))].Stupidest Question of the Session by Anon:Is there anything that Yahoo and Google are not able to accomplish? If you can tell us,We small vendors can try to accomplish. My answer:Boss,If there is something that they are not able to accomplish with the best of the resources, would they reveal that idea?.Grow up man.
